@media is a web design confrence in London

This blog has been long overdue an update, but I have some good excuses! Since my last update I have been to two web conferences, the first being OpenWeb 3 in Southampton on the 11th of June and the second being @media in London last Thursday and Friday, I'll talk more about those in a second; there's also been a bereavement in the family which meant I had to take time away from my desk, but lastly, there have been some internal changes here at my studio.

The OpenWeb Logo

For the past six years, since I was 18, I have been trading under the name Mallmus, which was once Mallmus Design and then became the more well-known MallmusMedia!, in the beginning it was great, things were exactly as I'd dreamed, while I was still a student I'd managed to generate income and stared to build up a brand around myself. The first people who hired me asked "what do you call yourself, what is your business called?", and I shamefully admit that I decided to use the name of a character from a game, a wizard called Mallmus, and before I knew it I'd become "that Mallmus guy who does logos" and the name stuck.

Why Your Opinion Doesn't Matter

By Richard Howard on May 19, 2009.

Dear reader, let me take you back, way back. Back to a simpler time. A time of innocence and laughter. I'm sure we all have fond memories of 2007.

I had just started managing a marketing company, generating leads for property investors. Basically, we ran advertising campaigns offering to buy people's houses and then sold the resultant enquiries to property investors. It's not an especially pleasent trade but there it is.

Our website was truly disgusting. It had been designed by the managing director, using Microsoft Publisher, in under three hours. Nothing lined up with anything else, all the images were streched and distorted and the colour scheme was indescribably garish.

My first reaction was to scrap the whole site and just start over. So start over I did. I built a whole new site that, if I do say so myself, looked great.

It bombed.

Future of Web Design Conference 2009

By Adam Wintle on May 05, 2009.

This is my short review of the Future of Web Design conference which I attended last Thursday in London. Originally this post was nowhere near short and got so detailed that I was going to have to split it down into two parts! After reading over what I'd wrote again, this is a slightly slimmer version.

I'd never attended any of the Carsonified events before, I had been to a few local events around the south coast but this was my first event of this scale - I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, I had heard very mixed reviews, but I really wanted to have my own opinion; if I didn't have a good experience then at least I'd tried it once. The event itself was held at Kensington Town Hall, after breakfast we headed to the venue where we were greeted by the Carsonified team.
